About this site

miravain.online is a small, independent, advertising-funded site that explains how particular video games actually work — including the parts the marketing tends to skip.

What we are trying to do

Most writing about free-to-play games falls into one of two piles. One pile is promotional: a feature list, a superlative, a download button. The other is hostile: the game is a scam, anyone who plays it has been had.

Neither is much use to a person who is simply deciding whether to install something. What that person needs is a plain description of the mechanics, an honest account of how the money works, the age rating and what it means, and a clear warning where a claim cannot be verified. That is what we try to write.

We are funded by advertising, which means we have a financial interest in you clicking a partner link. The way we deal with that is not to pretend otherwise: we disclose it at the top of every page, label every commercial link, and publish criticism of the advertised product where the evidence supports it. Our editorial policy sets out the rules, including the things we refuse to publish.

Who publishes it

How we work, in short

• Named authors and dated articles. No anonymous copy.
• Sources on the page. If we assert it, we say where it came from.
• No invented numbers. Where a figure moves, we point you at the live official source instead of printing something that will be stale.
• No fake testimonials and no invented ratings. Ever.
• Public corrections. When we get something wrong we fix it and log what changed, on the page. The main guide's corrections table is a live example.
• No tracking at all. No cookies, no analytics, no third-party requests. The cookie policy tells you how to verify that in your own browser.

Original illustrations

Every diagram on this site is an original SVG we drew for the article it appears in. We publish no product screenshots, no promotional artwork and no stock photography — partly because using someone else's marketing images on an ad-funded page is a copyright and trade mark problem, and partly because a diagram built to explain a mechanism explains it better than a screenshot does.
